Available for only the 2nd time in it’s long and interesting history, Vervain Mill patiently awaits the next person to be bewitched by it’s multitude of charms.
This 18th century mill was once the cornerstone of an old sugar plantation until it fell into disrepair around the end of the golden sugar era circa 1930’s.
Its thick, solid, volcanic stone walls, have stood the testament of time and provide a secure and cool interior to be enjoyed in this 4 storey edifice.
The property was sympathetically renovated and modernised in 1995 by the current owners.
The main entrance is arrived at by stone steps, which feel slightly grand and lead up to a vast terrace which boasts a large dining table – enough for 10, decorative pots of bougainvillea bursting with colour and a set of 3 custom shade sails for those hot afternoons. Enjoy looking out for Montserrat, Redonda, Antigua and Barbuda in your Atlantic vista.
The kitchen is accessed off the terrace through a formal antique double glass door. The cabinetry has been custom designed in wood with a painted finish and conforms perfectly to the curve of the mill. It is topped off with a concrete counter, which mirrors the grey accents in the volcanic stone.
A small pantry goes off the kitchen, providing the perfect space for storage and large appliances.
Internal stone steps lead down to the ground floor guest bedrooms and a cantilevered staircase leads up to the master bedroom on the 2nd floor and a sitting room with terrace on the 3rd floor.
The two ensuite bedrooms on the ground floor can be accessed via the kitchen stairs or directly from the garden through the French doors.
One room has a queen bed, closets and is prettily furnished with a lovely old rocking chair, dressing table and light airy drapes.
The second bedroom is a twin room featuring custom made antique style beds, complete with original artwork on the headboards earning this bedroom the moniker of the “Saints” bedroom. It is also prettily furnished with a range of dressing tables, side tables, mirrors and lamps.
Both bedrooms have ceiling fans and both bathrooms have shower, WC and Hand Basin.
The washing machine is on this level.
The owners utilise the second floor for their bedroom – the hand painted queen bed, crafted from antique French doors forms the centre-piece of this gorgeous room – painted wooden floors, arched windows and period furnishings complete the look.
Two day beds adorn this room for lounging and a small terrace with further seating allows you to take in the 360 degree views from this spectacular vantage point. A period writing desk completes the room.
The swimming pool has been cleverly incorporated from an old water cistern, the second old cistern provides the foundation for a Caribbean styled gazebo.
The grounds also have the ruins of an old boiling house, and the abundant flora and fauna have been artfully designed around these period features.
Vervain Mill is a successful rental – popular with families, but it is especially popular for romantic getaways and honeymooners.
Hot water is provided via a Solar Panel system.
Nearest Beach is 10 minutes
Airport/Water taxi pier is a 15 minute drive
Nearest restaurant and bar is the famous Golden Rock Inn, a spectacularly restored plantation inn and a “must see” on Nevis.
Gingerland is a popular village and has a great grocery store, a couple of local bars, and a host of roadside fruit and vegetable vendors.
The hiking is wonderful in this area, with access to The Source hike close by and The Waterfalls hike a few minutes drive away. A less strenuous hike, but one which is steeped in history, is to follow the goat trail from the New River estate to Coconut Walk. The road, as the name implies, was once bordered with luxuriant coconut trees. Now you can take a hike to the ruins of the estate, whilst looking out across the sea towards Redonda and Montserrat.
